He's the blue one that came with the skull car.

Prelude: The easiest way for people to realize that you’re talking about Hot Wheels X Transformers Twin Mill is to tell them that it’s the blue guy that came with the cool skull car Transformers figure. Yeah, Twin Mill is the wave mate of the far cooler Hot Wheels Transformer Bone Shaker. Poor guy. Still, he is a Hot Wheels Transformer and worth a review, at the least. Let’s say go!

Robot Mode: Twin Mill is a Deluxe-sized robot decked out in blue that clearly transforms into a car. You got the wheels on the shoulders and the legs to prove it, not to mention the engines with the exhaust pipes on the forearms. The latter gives him some minor G2 vibes, but overall he is just a good-looking car robot. He bears some resemblance to bots like RID Sideburn or Turbomaster Boss, but overall he is pretty much his own guy.

Twin Mill has the full range of articulation you expect from a modern-day Transformers figure, no limitations worth mentioning here. When you pose him, though (or look at him from the back), his one real flaw becomes apparent: namely that his lower legs are completely hollow and open on the inside and half-open to the back. This is partially due to the transformation design, but a bit more coverage would have been possible here.

The highlight of this figure are the engines on the forearms, which he wears like big, chunky war gauntlets, complete with exhaust pipes and air intakes, both of which can detach and serve as small guns with 5mm handles, too. Twin Mill also comes with two effect parts that can turn the pipes into flame throwers. Nicely done.

Overall Twin Mill is a nice Deluxe-class robot. Not terribly special, but good. If they’d managed to make his legs less open, he’d be very good.

Alternate Mode: Being a Hot Wheels crossover Transformer, Twin Mill naturally transforms into something a bit funkier than your average streetcar. Come on, Transformers stopped caring about the whole disguise thing way back in 1984 when it was all one-of-a-kind concept cars and robot dinosaurs, so why start now?

The transformation is complex without being difficult and then you have a 1969 Hot Wheels original design Twin Mill car. Interesting side note: the slightly metallic sheen of the car is a reference to the original Hot Wheel car’s “Spectraflame” sheen, which has since been outlawed due to being full of lead and dangerous to kids.

The car does look quite funky and is definitely not something you’d expect to see during rush hour in your city. You have actual rims, smaller exhaust pipes in the back, transparent plastic headlights, and painted turn signals, too. The only visible robot bit is on the underside, where you can see Twin Mill’s face looking at you. But ever since the Bumblebee Movie, that is fully canon and thus forgivable.

Bottom line: a very cool car mode. Not quite as cool as that of the other Hot Wheels X Transformers figure available right now, but still cool.

Remarks: As mentioned above, Twin Mill has the misfortune of being the wave mate of a far cooler-looking Transformer, namely Bone Shaker. Next to that guy, he does seem a bit plain. Like his wave mate, there is zero media presence for this character and not even the name is recycled from an existing Transformer, instead referring to a Hot Wheels car from the 1960s. So basically, he is just a cool-looking blue robot that transforms into a cool car, full stop.

Twin Mill is a good Deluxe class figure, no doubt about it. One flaw, the open legs, but nothing worth being wroth about. People really should start using words like ‘wroth’ again, by the way. Where was I? Right, Twin Mill. A good Deluxe class Transformers figure, but he’s being sold at a higher price point than your average Deluxe class figure, being a Hot Wheels crossover.

So bottom line: if you don’t care about the figure being a bit more expensive than usual due to the Hot Wheels name on its back, then you’re getting a good Deluxe class figure here. Nothing more, nothing less.

Rating: B-

Update: I am not a Hot Wheels fan, but I‘ve since been told by guys on Reddit that Twin Mill is pretty much THE Hot Wheels car. So I guess Twin Mill has more going for him than being skull car‘s wave mate.
