Prelude: Near the end of the original Masters line, we got a guy with a mosquito head who had a transparent chest full of blood that you could pump around to simulate blood-sucking action. Even among the very weird Masters characters, he stood out as especially weird. And somewhat gross, too. Now Mosquitor is back in the Masterverse line to suck blood and be gross. Let’s say go!
Review: Now the original Mosquitor figure was just a standard MotU body with armor and a very weird head. For his Masterverse reimagining, the new figure leans much more into the techno-organic horror angle. The body is still recognizably Mosquitor, but everything has been sharpened, armored, and modernized. The silver chest harness, red helmet details, detailed boots and gloves, and newly added purple insect wings give him a more dangerous silhouette while still preserving the goofy charm of the original concept.
Of course his main characteristic is the monstrous head with the long proboscis and big eyes. He absolutely does look like a horrible experiment gone wrong. His head is connected to the torso by a hose to showcase that he is not just stinging people, he also sucks out their blood. Now Mosquitor here lacks the liquid-pumping gimmick of the original figure, instead we have two exchangeable chest plates, one a solid red (he’s full), one with blood running down the inside (not quite full yet).
Articulation is standard for the Masterverse line, meaning Mosquitor comes with double knee and elbow joints and can assume all kinds of poses. His armored shoulder pads restrict his arm movements a bit, but otherwise he is not restricted at all. The wings on his back are on ball joints, allowing you to swivel them up and down for either a flying or coat-like look.
In terms of weapons, Mosquitor is fully equipped. The blaster looks less like a normal gun and more like some kind of alien draining device. The additional knife, dagger, and snake-like attachments can be used with either the head’s proboscis or the blaster, giving you quite a few different display options. Bottom line: if you like techno-organic monsters and grotesque villains, then Mosquitor is fully equipped to satisfy your needs.
Remarks: As mentioned above, Mosquitor was among the last vintage Masters of the Universe toys, coming out in 1987. This also makes his vintage figure one of the rarest toys in the franchise. He appeared in a mini-comic, where Hordak used him to drain the power of the Sorceress in order to set a trap for He-Man. He also faced He-Man himself and nearly overpowered him. He also has a brief appearance in the Masters Marvel Comics and, despite not appearing in the 2002 series, received a six inch statue from NECA.
To me, Mosquitor is one of those characters who proves why Masters of the Universe remains so much fun for collectors. The concept is utterly ridiculous if you describe it out loud: an evil mosquito vampire from the Horde, real name Bliddeon Black from the Gluubux Galaxy, with a transparent blood-filled chest. And yet, somehow, it works. Naturally the Masterverse figure lacks the original liquid gimmick (you want the Origins release for that one), but it makes up for it by making Mosquitor even more of a technological space horror than the original was.
So bottom line: lack of media presence aside, Mosquitor is a very cool-looking figure that works very well as a Horde villain and could presumably fit into just about any other superhero / science fiction / fantasy franchise as well. He is grotesque without being too dark, nostalgic without being boring, and distinctive enough to stand out even among the very weird MotU characters. Recommended to everyone who enjoys a slightly grotesque villain.
