Series: Universe 2.0 Autobot Blades carries powerful wire-guided missiles and a photon laser that can bore a hole through Decepticon armor at 200 yards, but he rarely uses either. He considers ranged combat to be unfair, which is funny because up close he's just about the dirtiest fighter there is. He'll use his rotors to kick dust and debris into his opponent's optics, then kick the poor guy right in the exhaust port, and keep on kicking him when he falls down. It's not that Autobot Blades likes to fight; it's just that he really, really likes to win.
Blades here is a repaint of Cybertron Evac / Galaxy Force Life Convoy
, so look there for the full review. Just some words on the differences here. Blades got a mostly red paint job for his Universe incarnation, despite the original figure
being about two thirds white, one third red, and that's pretty much it in terms of changes. Same figure otherwise, the Cyberkey gimmick to flip out the two guns on his shoulders remains intact. He's got an extendable winch on one arm, the helicopter rotors on the other, plus the mechanism to make them spin. All gimmicks work in helicopter mode as well. And... yeah, that's really all I can think of.
In the wake of the massive success of the Movie toyline in 2007/2008, Hasbro relaunched the Universe line as a mix of new molds and repaints. Blades was stuck with a repaint. Back then I was gobbling up almost everything with Transformers on it, so I bought Blades, too, despite already owning Life Convoy. The figure itself is good, don't get me wrong, but this repaint is superfluous, really. I've had these pictures of it sitting in my pipeline for years now and only remembered them because of my recent review of Generations Blades
. I've long since sold off this figure. So bottom line: a good mold, but given that Blades is mostly remembered as being part of a combiner, I'd recommend getting either the Cybertron/Galaxy Force version of it or the obligatory Springer repaint
(though only if you're somehow unable to get Generations Springer
). This one here is really just for the completists.
