BARRICADE & BLACKOUT & BUMBLEBEE & FRENZY & JAZZ & MEGATRON & OPTIMUS PRIME & RATCHET
Categories: Robot Hero
The eight Robot Heroes figures modelled after the Movie characters (some of them, at least) are paired off as strangely as their G1 counterparts. Bumblebee vs. Barricade makes sense, of course, and those two are pretty much the best-looking of the Robot Heroes, too. The rest, though? Ratchet - by far the worst-looking of the set - never even got near Megatron in the Movie. Neither did Jazz and Frenzy meet up, nor did Optimus and Blackout.
As far as looks go the set can be cut neatly in half. Bumblebee, Jazz, Barricade, and Megatron look pretty good. I especially like Megatron, whose Robot Heroes incarnation manages to look cute and scary at the same time, not an easy feat. Jazz and Bumblebee do a good job, too, and Barricade edges into the 'good' half by a hair's breath. The other four, though, fall a bit short. Optimus looks somewhat okay, but pretty boring. Blackout bears almost no resemblance to his Movie counterpart and Frenzy looks too distorted for my taste. The worst of the lot is Ratchet, who just looks stupid and has a stupid pose to boot.
Yeah, they're cute, but for some reason the Movie characters don't lend themselves to the Robot Heroes concept as well as the G1 characters do. Maybe because of their more realistic design, maybe because they aren't as iconic, I'm not sure. The fact is, though, that the Movie Robot Heroes, while still cute, are nowhere near as good as their G1 counterparts. Bumblebee, Jazz, Barricade, and Megatron look pretty spiffy, but the rest... well, I personally could have done without them. So with four times thumbs up and four times thumb down we end up in the middle and we'll call it average with a tiny little plus for the cuteness.
